  1. You have already purchased a Y-DNA test kit from Family Tree DNA and the person tested or to be tested is a male, and, the surname of any one or more of his direct paternal line ancestors was “Long” (or variant).
  2. You have a known Long ancestor or relative and have purchased a Y-DNA test or autosomal DNA test from FamilyTreeDNA, or, have transferred test results from another company to FTDNA.
  3. FTDNA’s matching criteria indicate that your kit has one or more genetic matches with another Long.

(Participation in the Long Surname DNA Project is of no value to those doing only an mtDNA test and does not serve the objectives of the project!)

How to Join the Long Surname DNA Project

To join the LONG Surname DNA Project, login to FTDNA’s website using your FTDNA kit number and password and click on the Manage Projects button.  If you do not have a kit number and password you can get them by ordering a test from FTDNA or transferring test results from another company to FTDNA.  To order a test kit go to the “Join the Long Group Project” page at:

https://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Long

If You have Already Done a DNA Test with Another DNA Testing Company and Wish to Join the Long Surname DNA Project:

You cannot join the the Long Surname DNA Project without having an FTDNA kit number and password.   If you’ve tested with another company, (i.e.,  AncestryDNA, 23andMe, Trace Genetics, Roots for Real, Relative Genetics, Oxford Ancestors, GeoGene, Gene Tree, DNAPrint Genomics, DNAHeritage, African Ancestry, et. al.) you should check for eligibility to transfer your test results to FTDNA via FTDNA’s Third Party Transfer Program.  See: https://www.familytreedna.com/landing/ydna-transfer.aspx  and  https://www.familytreedna.com/autosomal-transfer

If you’ve been tested for Y-DNA markers as part of the National Geographic Genographic Project your results can be transferred free of charge to Family Tree DNA enabling you to be added to the project.  Once the transfer is complete, you will receive an FTDNA kit number and password and will be able to join the Long Surname DNA Project.  See:  Transferring results from National Genographic to-FTDNA
