LONG and BUCHANAN Family History

This is an account of the ancestors and descendants of Marvin Elvin Long, my grandfather. Marvin was born in Choctaw Co., Alabama. We believe that his family originated in Ireland.

 

The following was written as an introduction to the LONG FAMILY TREE, assembled and distributed in 1958 by Charles Alexander Long (the son of Martin Daugherty Long)…

The Long Family Tree

The original progenitor of our family seems to have been one William Long, of pure Irish stock, who came from Ireland and settled in the colonies, presumably PA in about 1750.  

To William were born 17 sons whose names are not known, there being no information on daughters.  All the 17 served in the Revolutionary War, during which time they became separated, and the only one we know anything about, not finding any of the others, never knew what fate befell them.  Mrs. Isabella Long Fuller, in 1935, informed the writer that this one known survivor was William H. Long, her grandfather, born about 1785 or should it be 1765 or would it be her great grandfather born still earlier?  The chronology does not clear up, seeming to demand an immediate generation for the following data given as exact would not permit her own grandfather to have fought in the Revolutionary War.  

“About the year 1785 in Pennsylvania was born a boy whose name was William H. Long.  Near by, in the same neighborhood was born in 1787 a girl whose name was Rebecca Henley.  These children were of pure Irish stock, their parents having emigrated from Ireland to America about the same time a few years previously.  About the year 1807, young William H. Long was united in marriage to Miss Rebecca Henley.  Not long after their marriage they emigrated to VA and settled near the small town of Abingdon in Washington County.  In about four years they moved and settled in Franklin County, TN.  There they lived for ten years (?) and moved to Jackson County, AL.  They eventually settled in a part of Sumpter Co., AL that later became part of Choctaw County, AL.  

Through new information we might have the missing piece of the puzzle.  On the 1850 census for Choctaw Co., AL, it lists…

There was a William Long, Jr. who married a Anna Buchanan in on December 3, 1807 in Washington Co., VA.  William was possibly the son of William (b. about 1745 ??) and Rebecca Henley Long.  Could the Chronology below be correct.

WILLIAM LONG was born in about 1700 in Ireland.  His wife’s name was possibly ELIZABETH HENDERSON.  They came to Pennsylvania from Ireland.  

  1. JOHN LONG (a possible son) was born 1737 in Londondary, Ireland and died in 1826 in Grainger Co., Tenn.  He married to the widow, JANE HENRY in 1763 in near Staunton, Augusta Co., VA.  He served as a private in Col. Shelby’s Co. and was in the Battle of Kings Mountain.

WILLIAM HENRY LONG, Sr., was born 1745 in Ireland or PA and died after 1796 in Washington Co., Virginia. He married REBECCA 1765 in Virginia. She was born 1749, and died July 17, 1822 in Washington Co., Virginia. Her maiden name might have been HENLEY.  William served in the Battle of King’s Mountain.  Listed below is the possible children of William and Rebecca Long.

  3. SARAH LONG was born 1764 in Washington Co., Virginia, and died 1848 in Washington Co., Virginia. She married WILLIAM D. SNODGRASS August 22, 1786 in Washington Co. Virginia, son of JOHN SNODGRASS and MARY MILLER. He was born 1766 in Frederick Co. Virginia, and died 1830 in Washington Co., Virginia.
  4. ANN LONG was born in May 23, 1766 in Virginia and died July 8, 1848 in Lodi, Washington Co., Virginia.  She married JAMES SNODGRASS October 30, 1781 in Washington Co., Virginia.  He was born October 31, 1762 in Frederick Co. Virginia and died July 3, 1828 in Liberty Hall, Washington Co., Virginia.
  5. MARY LONG was born in Abt. 1771.
  6. JEAN LONG was born in 1774.  She married JOHN SNODGRASS June 27, 1799 in Washington Co., Virginia.  He was born 1774 in Washington Co., Virginia and died in 1835 in Alabama.
  7. MARTHA LONG was born in Abt. 1779.
  8. ALEXANDER LONG was born in 1780.
  9. WILLIAM HENRY LONG, JR., was born in 1782 in Virginia and died Aft. 1850 in Lauderdale Co., Mississippi.
  10. MARGARET LONG was born in 1787.
  11. NANCY LONG was born in 1793.

WILLIAM HENRY LONG, JR was born 1782 in Virginia, and died After 1850 in Lauderdale Co., Mississippi. He married ANNA BUCHANAN December 3, 1807 in Washington Co., Virginia, the daughter of Joseph Buchanan and Ann Wilson. She was born 1787 in Virginia, and died After 1850. It has been said that both are buried in the Bailey Cemetery, located 18 miles East of Meridian, and South of Kewanne, Mississippi ??.

William and Anna left Washington Co., Virginia, in about 1811 and moved to Franklin Co., Tennessee. They lived there about 10 years before moving to Jackson Co., Alabama. They eventually settled in the part of Sumpter Co., Alabama that later became Choctaw Co., Alabama. They were in Choctaw Co., Alabama in 1850 according to the census. When William died his wife, Anna and his son-in-law, Martin Daugherty were the executors of his estate.

He was born 1805 in North Carolina.  Elizabeth might have died between 1850 and 1860, because in 1859 in Clarke Co., MS, Eli had married Elizabeth Smith.  They were listed on the 1860 and the 1870 census of Clarke Co., MS.  On the 1860 census, James Biggs is listed as 16 years old.  Were Eli and his second wife the parents of Martha Jane M. Briggs who married Robert Henley Long?  On the 1870 census of Clarke, Eli and Elizabeth had a 6 year old daughter named Margaret which is the same age as the above mentioned Martha.

WILLIAM HENLEY LONG was born February 13, 1824 in Franklin Co., Tennessee, and died October 16, 1900 in Choctaw Co., Alabama. He married MARY ANN KORNEGAY Abt. 1851 in Alabama, daughter of LEWIS WILLIAM KORNEGAY and SARAH KEATON.  She was born May 15, 1835 in Alabama, and died May 25, 1903 in Choctaw Co., Alabama.

On the 1850 Census for Choctaw Co., AL, William was listed as 26 years old, born in Virginia and living with his parents, William & Ann Long. Also on the census, it states that the Kornegay family was living in the household before them. They were married about a year later, since their oldest, Sarah Jane was born in 1852. On the 1860 Choctaw County, Alabama Census, Mary Ann’s 16 year old sister, Harriett was living with them. Both William and Mary Ann are buried in Antioch Cemetery, just over the state line in Clarke Co., Mississippi.

Long, who was the daughter of James and Cena Long.  Copeland also joined the Civil War in Co. D 7th Mississippi Infantry, the same unit that Henry Carroll served in…Jeremy Foster is the descendent of George and Nealie Barry.

When Jim married his first Wife, Mary Elizabeth Miller  the bond was signed on January 26, 1879, by J. H. Long and S. S. Kornegay (Samuel S. Kornegay, his uncle).

  1. SARAH IDA LONG was born November 18, 1880 in Cyril, Choctaw Co., Alabama, and died May 27, 1911 in Choctaw Co., Alabama. She married WILLIAM CURTIS TIMS December 6, 1899 in Choctaw Co., Alabama, son of SARAH M. TIMS. He was born June 10, 1866 in Alabama, and died May 11, 1911 in Choctaw Co., Alabama. Before Sarah and William died in 1911 she asked her father and stepmother, who was also her sister-in-law, to raise her three small children. After they both died within 12 days apart their grandparents took them on to raise. On the 1920 census of Choctaw all three children were listed in James H. Long’s household. They are buried at the Bethel Methodist Church Cemetery, Choctaw County, Alabama.

He married CORRIE LEE COOPER February 8, 1906 in Choctaw Co., Alabama, daughter of SHEPPARD COOPER and HARRIET CARROLL. She was born March 26, 1890 in Cyril, Choctaw Co., Alabama, and died January 25, 1958 in Quitman, Clarke Co., Mississippi.When Marvin and Corrie were married, her Brother, John D. Bevin Cooper, signed for them to get married because her Father, Sheppard Cooper, had died about two years before. Charles E. McCall was the Judge of Probate and performed the service at the residence of her step-mother, Mary Boles Cooper.  Marvin was a share cropper and Corrie raised 11 kids, one other child died at birth.

R. C. & Nellie LONG

 ROBERT CARLTON LONG, better known as R.C., was my father. He was born November 25, 1920 in Cyril, Choctaw Co., Alabama. He married (1) NELLIE MARIE BRADDOCK February 22, 1941 in Stonewall, Clarke Co., Mississippi, daughter of WILLIAM BRADDOCK and MARY ALICE BARNES. She was born December 1, 1921 in Enterprise, Clarke Co., Mississippi, and died September 2, 1971 in Mobile, Mobile Co., Alabama. He quit school in about the fourth grade to help the family by picking cotton for 50 cents a week.  He later worked in the Stonewall Cotton Mill, where it was customary for the men employees to walk the women workers home from work.  On one occasion he walked Alice Braddock home from work and this is how he met her oldest daughter Nellie Marie Braddock.  On February 22, 1941 they were married on the other side of the River Road Bridge in Stonewall, MS.  He has always said that she was the prettiest girl he had ever seen.  R.C. joined the U.S. Army at Camp Shelby, Mississippi on November 10, 1943 and was discharged on January 17, 1946, from Camp Shelby. He went to work in the Cotton Mill, Stonewall, MS, 1948, prior to this time he had worked on the farm with his father. In 1954, they moved to Mobile, Alabama, and went to work at Brookley Air Force Base as Guard. He retired from Civil Service in 1968, when Brookley Field was closed down. He then worked as manager for Bellus Hess and Hudson Oil Companies until his retirement in 1982.

He married (2) OCTAVIA LORETTA GIDEONS August 9, 1974 in Bay Minette, Baldwin Co., Alabama. She was born October 30, 1931 in Bay Minette, Baldwin Co., Alabama.

Buchanan Family History

Our possible BUCHANAN Ancestors are JOSEPH and ANNA BUCHANAN.  According to Steve Deitz they had a daughter named Anna, who could possibly be our ANNA BUCHANAN LONG.  I am still trying to find concrete proof of this.
